Colin Powell Endorses Barack Obama for President

Etc

General Colin Powell, former Secretary of State under George W. Bush, endorsed Senator Barack Obama on Meet the Press Sunday morning. The endorsement by the high-ranking, widely-respected Republican for the Democratic nominee marked another unconventional turn in an unconventional election.

Powell’s endorsement came a little over two weeks before the general election, and it remains to be seen to what extent it will sway American voters as the last of them make up their minds in the countdown to November 4th.

Though the impact of Powell’s endorsement may still be a matter of speculation, the reasons for it are not. In his explanation of the reasons for his support of Senator Obama, former Secretary Powell highlighted at least seven reasons for his choice, from his disagreement with McCain’s selection of Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, to his support of Obama’s “inclusive, broader reach” as well as his “steadiness…and depth of knowledge.”

In his endorsement, Powell gave voice to concerns that many average Americans have expressed in recent months, as they have watched the McCain campaign seem to lose focus and polarize the electorate. Like Powell, many Americans I know were frustrated with Senator McCain’s response to the economic crisis, and took comfort in Senator Obama’s measured, reasoned approach and continued focus on the economy as the most important issue for Americans. Like Powell, many I know were alarmed by McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as the person to run the country should he not make it to the end of his term, and again took comfort in Obama’s choice of Joe Biden to fill that same great role.

Yet the most powerful moment of the Powell’s endorsement didn’t come with any of these points, however well-reasoned they were. It came when Powell shared his own moment of truth–what he experienced when looking at a photo essay in which a woman is grieving at Arlington Cemetery, with her head on her son’s grave. Her son was an American-born citizen and solider who was killed in Iraq; he received medals of honor for his service; he was fourteen years old at the time of the 9/11 attacks and enlisted in the U.S. army a few months after he graduated from high school. Her son, Kareem Rashad Sultan Kahn, was also a Muslim.

This mother was at the grave of her son, a man who was an American, a soldier, and a Muslim. These characteristics are not mutually exclusive. And the recent insinuations that “Muslim” is synonymous with “terrorist” and “evil,” that “Muslim” should used as an insult and a disqualifier, that being Muslim means not being an American, grossly and shamefully misrepresents what this country is all about.

For me, this part of Powell’s explanation cut right through the tit-for-tat distractions that are present in any political campaign. This was a simple and necessary reminder of our humanity. In some ways, it seems that this election season has caused some to disregard the founding premise of our country: all of us are created equal. Even during a heated election, we should never lose site of this most essential principle, as this is the idea that made our country great in the first place.

The United States of America is not supposed to be a place where everyone holds the same beliefs, practices the same religion, or shares the same facial features or skin color. It is supposed to be a place where anyone has a chance. It is supposed to be a place where it simply isn’t ok to use a person’s religion as an insult. For me, and–I hope–for many, Colin Powell’s words on Sunday morning helped remind us what it really means to be an American.

Colin Powell also had the opportunity to speak out against the war from the beginning and chose not to. True, he is a great American; however, his timing seems to be a little off on not supporting the war; a war he so endorsed and supported President Bush on. I, too, listened to Powell’s endorsement of Obama and only heard his discontent with McCain and the war as opposed to his confidence in Obama. Am I missing something here?
Yes, this is a great country, as the pledge states:
“One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”! Freedom of speech (i.e. Joe the Plumber) freedom of religion (i.e. Christianity). Has Christianity been under attack lately? Do I believe Obama is a Muslim - No. Do I believe he is the most qualified for President - No. Has nothing to do with his race, religion, his background or his choice of Biden. Has to do with his experience and decision-making at this time in his life, in addition to his policies and projected programs. There are those who say if Obama wins, it is because of his race; there are those who say if he loses, it is because of his race. There are fundamental differences between he and McCain! That is what the election is about. Conservatism vs. Liberalism ……Capitalism vs. Socialism….High taxes vs. low taxes…
Question: Why should we all work and save and follow the American dream? Maybe those of us who do that should take a second look at our lives and just sit back and let the government “spread a little of that wealth” our way!! Well, we probably could never do that because we DO believe in the American dream. Work hard, don’t give up, help your fellow man and save. Don’t punish those who are successful either through hard work of their own or ancestors who have been fortunate enough to leave something to their heirs. These people invest, open businesses, give thousands and thousands to charities. They don’t need the government telling them how to best handle their money and which charities to give the money to, as in “spread the wealth”. Let’s keep the election on the issues! And as for the war casualties, they are horrific. I cannot imagine having a son or daughter there! But if I did, I would be proud of the fact they are there on a mission to protect freedom here and abroad and to protect our great country. They (the soldiers) should be treated with honor and dignity and appreciation - no matter one’s support, or lack thereof, of the war. Did we forget we have an ALL VOLUNTEER military. It is very frustrating to hear some Americans putting down our country and practically ridiculing our soldiers.
And thank goodness, the election is almost here! This has been one of the most divisive campaigns and elections I have witnessed. No matter the outcome. I hope we Americans remember we live in the greatest nation in the world and come together to support our President and get this country back on track!

Seems like Colin Powell also had a concern about the possibility of more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court. I would like to see Dr. Martin Luther King’s niece on Meet the Press. Thousands of little babies do not get the chance to grow up in America because they are murdered every day and call it abortion. This is one reason I will not vote for Senator Obama, and I don’t think Alveda King will either. Thank you for your website and letting me voice my concerns.

Seems like General Colin Powell also had a concern as to the possibility of more conservatives being appointed to the Supreme Court. My concern is that thousands of little babies are murdered every day in the name of abortion and not given a chance to grow up in America. I would like to see Dr Martin Luther King’s niece on Meet The Press. She is pro-life and I don’t think she will be voting for Senator Obama, nor will I. Thanks for your website and the priviledge to add my opinion

Aunt Patsy makes her debut on Politicsource–yipee!

I am glad you posted a comment. If I tried to write all my thoughts on the issue you raised, I would probably need a whole new blog just for that.

So I will offer only two brief points:

First is that no one “supports” abortion. It is an awful, awful thing, and everyone I know, whether they are pro-life or pro-choice, wishes that it didn’t have to exist. But the fact is, whether it is legal or not, women are going to seek abortions. Unfortunately, making abortions illegal doesn’t make them go away, it makes them much more dangerous. If abortion is criminalized, women die too.

Second, one of the most important ways to do justice to democracy, to do a service to your country, is by choosing your most important issues and voting on those. And that is exactly what you have done. So kudos to you and to anyone else who decides what is important–for them, and for the country–informs themselves, and casts their vote accordingly.

It really doesn’t surprise me Colin Powell is choosing a “position” instead of a principle!

Amen, sister!!! I can’t tell you how excited I am about the prospect of hearing about the world from our leaders in government without being bombarded with black and white world view terms like “evil doers” and “axis of evil”. This whole blog thing blows me away.I like the way you focus on the issues and the evidence, not the drama. Nice work Nic.

Eight days until the election.. I plead with those of you who believe in our freedom of speech and security to please vote for John McCain. Do we really want to live in a country where there is no check and balance system in our government. Do we really want to live in a country where anyone who dares question the “Obama” elite will be subjected to unprovoked, invasive checks into their backgrounds and then this information made public. Take the time, (short as it is) check out the story on Barbara West, a reporter from Orlando, Florida. Ref. the following site. http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/25/obama-campaign-cuts-interviews-florida-tv-station/ The Obama machine thought her interview too harsh on Biden. And guess what, she was the executive assistant to Peter Jennings- hardly conservative! Take the time, people, read what action the Obama machine took concerning this ! So let me see, thus far, there are several incidences of these situations….Corsi, West and Joe the Plumber…..Take the time to open your eyes and see that this country is headed down a slippery slope at a very fast rate to socialism and communism. Some things are more important than taxes and even healthcare or education. I believe my freedom takes priority over all the above. Change has been a big word throughout this election on both sides. Well, this country is changing; too slowly maybe for some, but there have been remarkable positive changes. Changes which seem to be more inclusive than years past. But if one thinks that the changes that Obama will make will be “inclusive”, you are wrong! Dead wrong! He can try to hide his “socialism” agenda behind the mask of “change”, but as I see (almost weekly) another story of someone being “shut down” or made to “shut up” because of their “questions”, I become afraid. Then there is ACORN. Check out this site. http://www.gop.com/News/NewsRead.aspx?Guid=009e19fd-fb95-40b2-9a35-19df9aea8129 How about the terrorist Bill Ayers http://www.gop.com/news/NewsRead.aspx?Guid=768aa784-72f3-4b43-acb6-c5fe81d901cd Lots of reading, but get informed! Don’t drink the koolade. I am voting for McCain because I believe in this country, I believe in the Constitution (esp. 1st and 2nd amendments), I believe in our young people (both born and UNBORN), I am against abortion, I am for the death penalty, and I believe in less government in my life! (I hope Obama doesn’t come looking for me!) :-)
